Simple and complicated tooth extraction

What is Simple and complicated tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from the mouth. There are two main types: simple and complicated (or surgical) extractions.

Simple Extraction: This procedure is used when the tooth can be seen in the mouth. General steps include:

The dentist uses an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth.
Then forceps are used to remove the tooth.
Local anesthesia is typically used to numb the area.
Complicated (Surgical) Extraction: This is required when a tooth may have broken off at the gum line or has not erupted in the mouth. The process involves:

Making a small incision into the gum.
Sometimes removing some of the bone around the tooth or cutting the tooth in half in order to extract it.
Surgical extractions usually require a stronger anesthesia or conscious sedation.
Aftercare for both types involves managing minor bleeding, avoiding certain foods, and keeping the area clean to prevent infection. Pain management, usually through prescribed or over-the-counter painkillers, is also important. The complexity of the extraction and recovery can vary based on the individual case and the location of the tooth in the mouth.
